Westminster eyes PSL title

Westminster Christian, the area's other state finalist from the 2007 season, has its first-ever Private School League title within reach.

The Warriors are currently 11-0 in league play with five contests remaining. Westminster will play a two-game series Tuesday and Wednesday against Aurora Christian before traveling to play second-place Illiana Christian in a critical doubleheader next Saturday. The Warriors also have to make up a game against Walther Lutheran, but a date hasn't been set.

Westminster's perfect record thus far in PSL play represents a major turnaround for a program that's traditionally been stuck in the league's basement.

"The first year I started coaching was the first year we were in the PSL, and it was three years before we won one conference game," seventh-year Westminster coach Jeff Moeller said. "Now we're sitting on top of (the league standings), so it's pretty exciting."

Anyone questioning the league's level of competition should note that three PSL teams reached sectional championship games last year and Walther Lutheran finished third in the state in Class A.

Westminster, which is the only Class 1A team in the conference, won 4-3 at Walther Lutheran in the only meeting between the teams this year.
